Smith (NSN: 0-78927), United States Naval Reserve, was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross (Posthumously) for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as Commanding Officer of Patrol Bombing Squadron ONE HUNDRED ONE (VPB-101) over Borneo and Mindanao from 21 August 1944 to 24 December 1944.
