The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Navy and Marine Corps Medal (Posthumously) to Lieutenant Junior Grade Leroy A. Shreiner (NSN: 0-243178), United States Naval Reserve, for heroic conduct at Apamama, on 2 January 1944. Observing a PB4Y-1 plane parked in close proximity to another which was on fire, he started the engines and taxied the aircraft out of the danger zone, although 50-caliber bullets from the burning plane were flying in every direction. Returning to the burning plane, which contained a 500-pound bomb, he taxied it to a place of safety.

His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Naval Service.
