(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: Lieutenant Commander John B. Pye (NSN: 0-82755), United States Navy, was awarded the Silver Star (Posthumously) for gallantry in action as Torpedo Officer aboard the U.S.S. SWORDFISH (SS-193), during the NINTH War Patrol of that Submarine in enemy-controlled waters from 29 December 1943 to 7 February 1944. Lieutenant Commander Pye rendered invaluable assistance to his Commanding Officer in carrying out repeated torpedo attacks to sink two hostile freighters totaling over 15,000 tons and to damage an additional freighter of 7,500 tons. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Naval Service.
