The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Chief Gunner’s Mate Lois E. Presley (NSN: 2740689), United States Navy, for gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving aboard the U.S.S. GRAMPUS (SS-207), during the FIRST War Patrol of that vessel in enemy controlled waters of the Marshall Islands and along the shipping lanes between the important Japanese bases of Truk and Rabaul during the period 8 February 1942 to 4 April 1942. His exceptional skill and high degree of efficiency in directing and instructing those under him in the operation and maintenance of the ship’s guns and small arms kept the armament on board his ship in a constant state of readiness. His knowledge and leadership assisted his Commanding Officer in successfully executing torpedo attacks which resulted in the sinking of two large 10,000 ton enemy tankers. His outstanding performance of duty at all times contributed to the success of his vessel in offensive actions. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Naval Service.
