The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Ensign William C. Hedrick, Jr. (NSN: 0-162853), United States Naval Reserve, for gallantry in action as Assistant Communications Officer aboard the U.S.S. STRONG (DD-467) when that vessel was torpedoed and sunk by the Japanese in Kula Gulf on 5 July 1943. Ensign Hedrick insisted on remaining below decks in order to destroy secret and confidential matter, continuing in his self-imposed task until the STRONG went down. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Naval Service.
