The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Gunner’s Mate First Class Ben R. Clark (NSN: 3561775), United States Navy, for gallantry in action while serving aboard a United States Submarine during war patrols in enemy-controlled waters during World War II. Serving during hazardous war patrols in Japanese waters, Gunner’s Mate First Class Clark manned his gun with outstanding skill throughout five surface engagements with hostile sips. On one occasion he was responsible for sinking a sailing vessel and subsequently assisted in the beaching of a large coastal steam. He contributed greatly to the wrecking of a 2,000-ton cargo ship. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Naval Service.
