The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Gunner’s Mate Second Class James W. Chandler (NSN: 3567487), United States Navy, for gallantry in action while attached to the U.S.S. LST 289 when she was attacked off the coast of England by German E-boats on 28 April 1944. Gunner’s Mate Second Class Chandler was stationed at the fog generator of the fantail. By his timely warning and courage in the face of grave peril, he saved the lives of many shipmates. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Naval Service.
