Thomas Sargent graduated from the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, Class of 1938. From 1970 to 1974 he served as the 11th Vice Commandant of the U.S. Coast Guard, the first to hold that position under its new title. He retired as a U.S. Coast Guard Vice Admiral in 1974.
