The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Navy and Marine Corps Medal (Posthumously) to Seaman Second Class Boleslaus Alexander Mankus (NSN: 8106236), United States Naval Reserve, for heroic conduct during World War II. When a plane from his carrier crashed on deck, he unhesitatingly rushed to the aid of a crew member whose clothing caught fire in the rescue attempt. Frustrated in his valiant attempt, his own clothing caught fire and he succumbed to burns.
