The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Navy and Marine Corps Medal (Posthumously) to Teacher Third Class William Joseph Johns (NSN: 6187277), United States Navy, for heroic conduct when two U.S. subchasers were bombed and set afire during the assault on Sicily, in August 1943. Teacher Third Class Johns worked with outstanding courage to control the blaze until enemy bombs struck again and destroyed the craft.
