The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Navy and Marine Corps Medal (Posthumously) to Motor Machinist’s Mate Second Class Stephen Evanisko (NSN: 6520489), United States Naval Reserve, for heroic conduct in August 1943. Severely injured when thrown from a salvage vessel by the explosion of an enemy shell during the invasion of Sicily, Motor Machinist’s Mate Second Class Evanisko unhesitatingly removed his own life preserver and placed it near a shipmate who was in danger of drowning, despite the grave risk to himself.
