The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy and Marine Corps Medal to Captain Thomas L. Wattles, United States Navy, for heroic conduct as Commander of a Destroyer Squadron in the attack on Sicily, 10 July 1943. Captain Wattles directed the hazardous screening operations of his force despite persistent and determined air bombardment and submarine attacks. His command contributed greatly to the protection of the transport area.
