The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Lieutenant Harold N. Murphy, United States Naval Reserve, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight . Lieutenant Murphy scored three direct hits and probably two others on Japanese destroyers during vital bombing raids in the Solomon Islands area. On 15 October 1942 he assisted in sinking four, and possibly five ships of a Japanese invasion fleet in the vicinity of Guadalcanal.
