The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Chief Watertender John H. Sabo, United States Navy, for gallantry in action when the U.S.S. HENLEY (DD-391) was torpedoed on 3 October 1943. Chief Watertender Sabo steadfastly remained in the flooded engine room and climbed to the lighted burners in order to close a valve and stop the flow of fuel oil which was in danger of igniting. Under his efficient direction, the crew was evacuated safely. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Naval Service.
