The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant, Junior Grade (CEC) John H. Harker, United States Navy, for gallantry in action during World War II. Lieutenant, Junior Grade, Harker landed in enemy territory on a reconnaissance mission. He penetrated deep into the Japanese-held land to obtain vital information regarding terrain, hydrographic conditions and the strength and disposition of the enemy. He remained on the island for three days although he knew he could expect no help from outside sources and that discovery meant capture or death. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Naval Service.
