The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Lieutenant, Junior Grade Malcolm J. Miller, United States Navy, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight in the Solomon Islands area on 20 July 1943. Under particularly adverse weather conditions, Lieutenant, Junior Grade, Miller made a successful masthead-level bombing attack on an enemy destroyer which caused the ship to explode and sink almost immediately. He also made many attacks on shore installations and shipping in the area.
