The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Lieutenant, Junior Grade Carroll R. Campbell, United States Navy, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight during World War II. After leading a group of Torpedo Planes against an enemy corvette in Kahili Harbor area, he spotted a hostile supply vessel and, turning back alone, despite threat of enemy plane assault, delivered a masthead-level attack which completely destroyed the loaded craft. From 26 April to 17 July 1943, he took part in numerous missions and completed three extremely hazardous operations.
