The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Corporal [then Private] Joseph Ferrullo (ASN: 6982376), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with the 25th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces on 12 January 1943 at Guadalcanal, Solomon Islands. During the advance on a hill by a company of which Private Ferrullo was a member, enemy snipers threatened to hold up the entire advance by picking off leading troops. Corporal Ferrullo volunteered to seek out these snipers and destroy them. He accounted for four of the enemy single-handed by use of hand grenades and by charging with fixed bayonet. His achievement aided the company in attaining its objective. Corporal Ferrullo’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
