The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Seaman Second Class Carl L. Winget, United States Navy, for gallantry in action during the Battle of the Coral Sea, 8 May 1942. Wounded by a strafing attack, Seaman Second Class Winget refused to leave his battle station and remained at his gun with utter disregards for his own safety. He contributed to the destruction of four Japanese planes during the attack on his ship. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Naval Service.
