(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Captain (Infantry) Richard Herrick Ferriter, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving as Commanding Officer of the 29th Reconnaissance Troop (Mechanized), 29th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces near Pinangatalan, Luzon, Philippine Islands, on 8 February 1945. Captain Ferriter led 35 members of his reconnaissance troop in annihilation of more than 50 Japanese soldiers. He, himself, accounted for three enemy killed with his carbine, and he killed or wounded many more with hand grenades. Captain Ferriter’s outstanding leadership, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
