The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Boatswain’s Mate Second Class Dan J. Goodman, United States Navy, for gallantry in action as Landing Boat Coxswain from a warship during the occupation of Attu, Territory of Alaska, during World War II. Boatswain’s Mate Second Class Goodman repeatedly brought his boat through heavy shelling and delivered supplies, explosives and ammunition to the beach. Later he carried out reconnaissance landings on enemy positions and assisted in the evacuation of American troops trapped by enemy forces. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Naval Service.
