The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) Steve J. Fejes (ASN: 0-1794928), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with an Infantry Company of the 145th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces from 28 to 31 July 1943, at New Georgia, Solomon Islands. When the advance of his platoon was held up by hostile automatic-weapon fire, Second Lieutenant Fejes crawled forward, reconnoitered for a route of approach, selected one, and then led his men to within hand-grenade range of the enemy. In the ensuing action Second Lieutenant Fejes worked his way into a Jap connecting trench and personally eliminated an enemy pillbox. Following this, he engaged in further personal reconnaissance for laying down mortar fire on an enemy-held ridge, and then skillfully led his men forward to its successful occupation. On subsequent days Second Lieutenant Fejes repeatedly led his platoon as the forward element in determined attacks against enemy strong points, and on one occasion killed two occupants of a hostile pillbox with well-aimed rifle fire. Late in the afternoon of 31 July, Second Lieutenant Fejes was struck by mortar fragments and seriously wounded. Despite this he insisted on giving last minute instructions to his men before evacuation. Second Lieutenant Fejes’ extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 37th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
