Bureau of Naval Personnel Information Bulletin No. 322 (January 1944)

The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant, Junior Grade William F. Chamberlain, United States Navy, for gallantry in action during World War II. As Pilot of a plane in combat against a German submarine, Lieutenant, Junior Grade, Chamberlain attacked in the face of concentrated anti-aircraft fire, and straddled the enemy ship with his first depth charges. He followed immediately with a second attack and scored a direct hit, destroying the enemy submarine. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Naval Service.
