The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Commander John Krebb, United States Navy, for gallantry in action on 30 June 1943. During landing operations in the Solomon Islands, Commander Krebb, as Engineering Officer in the U.S.S. McCAWLEY (APA-4), kept the engineering plant in operation at 25% increase above designed speed. When his ship was torpedoed, he attempted to descent to the operating plant from the dynamo flats in an effort to control further damage. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Naval Service.
