    The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy and Marine Corps Medal to Aviation Machinist’s Mate Second Class Robert Q. Johnson, United States Navy, for heroic conduct when a fighter plane crashed and caught afire at the Naval Air Station, San Diego, on 8 December 1942. Aviation Machinist’s Mate Second Class Johnson fought his way through an inferno of fire and smoke and removed the unconscious pilot from the blazing wreckage.
