Pate, United States Navy, for heroic conduct while serving aboard a United States Submarine during war patrols in enemy controlled waters during World War II. By his skill and accuracy in operating the special equipment under his care during three successful war patrols in enemy controlled waters, Radio Technician First Class Pate directly contributed to the destruction of a hostile destroyer.
