The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy and Marine Corps Medal to Quartermaster First Class John Erem, United States Navy, for heroic conduct while serving aboard a United States Submarine during war patrols in enemy controlled waters during World War II. During five successful patrols aboard a submarine, Quartermaster First Class Erem’s skill and judgment were invaluable to his Commanding Officer in the sinking of an important amount of enemy shipping. Twice, when his vessel was diving, Quartermaster First Class Erem saved the lives of his shipmates by remaining at his station to clear and close the conning tower hatch, despite in-rushing water.
