The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Staff Sergeant Jessie Floyd Farr (ASN: 37104536), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company A, 1st Battalion, 103d Infantry Regiment, 43d Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces near Pozorrubio, Luzon, Philippine Islands, on 23 January 1945. On that date his company was attacking in a northerly direction on a hill 3,000 yards north of Pozorrubio. Staff Sergeant Farr was commanding a squad with the mission of protecting the right flank of two attacking companies by holding a small knoll for observation to the flank. Along the flank his Company Commander and an artillery observer were directing fire on the enemy. To the flank of the ridge, Staff Sergeant Farr observed Japanese troops that had opened fire on the observing party with rifles and hand grenades at very close range. Disregarding his own safety, Staff Sergeant Farr left the cover of his own position and charged the enemy foxholes, firing a clip of ammunition and killing one of the enemy in his charge. His rifle empty, he grabbed a Browning Automatic Rifle from one of his men and attempted to use it, but the rifle failed to fire. Without hesitation, he lunged forward into the enemy foxhole, reached into it, and wrested the rifle from an enemy soldier, and with two thrusts of his bayonet, killed the enemy soldier with his own rifle. Moments later four additional enemy exposed themselves and Staff Sergeant Farr directed the fire of his squad on the enemy group, killing them all. By his bold actions Staff Sergeant Farr inflicted heavy casualties on the enemy and saved the lives of his company commander and another officer who were manning the Observation Post. Staff Sergeant Farr’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
