The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting a Gold Star in lieu of a Second Award of the Silver Star to Lieutenant Ralph F. Pleatman, United States Navy, for gallantry in action while serving as Assistant Approach Officer aboard a United States Submarine during war patrols in enemy-controlled waters during World War II. His excellent judgment and thorough knowledge of attack problems assisted his commanding officer considerably in conducting a successful torpedo attack against an enemy convoy which resulted in sinking a total of more than 15,000 tons. In addition, three Marine aviators were rescued during this patrol. His calm manner and devotion to duty contributed to the success of his vessel. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Naval Service.
