The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Gunner’s Mate Third Class Robert C. Tyler, United States Navy, for gallantry in action against the enemy while serving on board the Motor Torpedo Boat Tender U.S.S. NIAGARA (PG-52), which was subjected to bombing by Japanese aircraft in the South Pacific Area on 25 May 1943. Gunner’s Mate Third Class Tyler, when forced to abandon the guns by fire and smoke, organized a fire fighting party and led them below decks to the flames. With complete disregard for his own safety, he entered a blazing compartment in which small arms ammunition was exploding and attempted to extinguish the fire. He continued his efforts until forced out by the flames, which were hopelessly out of control. When ordered to abandon ship, he skillfully handled the gig and was successful in towing life rafts and rescuing shipmates from the water. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Naval Service.
