The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Gunner’s Mate Third Class Joseph C. Tropea, United States Navy, for gallantry in action during World War II. While serving aboard the Motor Torpedo Boat Tender U.S.S. NIAGARA (PG-52), in the South Pacific during an attack by Japanese aircraft on 25 May 1943, Gunner’s Mate Third Class Tropea entered a blazing compartment in which small arms ammunition was exploding and fought desperately to extinguish the fire, until forced out by flames which were hopelessly beyond control. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Naval Service.
