The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Electrician’s Mate First Class Gardiner C. Paules, United States Navy, for gallantry in action while serving aboard a United States Submarine during a war patrol in enemy-controlled waters during World War II. During the SIXTH War Patrol of his submarine, Electrician’s Mate First Class Paules, as first loader of the deck gun, loaded 35 rounds of ammunition in the face of intense fire from an enemy tanker, which was attacked and destroyed. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Naval Service.
