The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Electrician’s Mate First Class Stanley Fly Kline, United States Navy, for gallantry in action as a member of an anti-sabotage party aboard a British warship during entry into the Port of Oran, Algeria, on 8 November 1942. Electrician’s Mate First Class Kling crawled through a small overhead hatch and wormed his way along the deck under a hail of machine gun fire to open a larger hatch, thus enabling 42 men to escape from a damaged compartment occupied by one of the boarding parties. Later, while loading clips for an automatic rifle which a chief petty officer was firing at an enemy destroyer, Electrician’s Mate First Class Kline was killed by the explosion for a nearby shell hit. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Naval Service.
