The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Technician Fifth Grade Carroll E. Fairclo, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company L, 3d Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces near Mignano, Italy, on 9 November 1943. Sergeant Fairclo blasted out two enemy pill boxes and forced the crew of a third to flee. Although painfully wounded in this action, he remained at the outpost for 18 hours. When he returned to his unit the following day, he declined evacuation to the hospital, volunteering for observation post duty to direct mortar fire on two enemy machine guns. Technician Fifth Grade Fairclo’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 3d Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
