(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: Chief Petty Officer Duncan C. McRae, Jr., United States Navy, was awarded the Silver Star for gallantry in action while serving aboard a United States Submarine during a war patrol in enemy-controlled waters in World War II. When he noticed that the conning tower hatch had been improperly closed and in-rushing water endangered the ship, Chief McRae fought his way to the tower and securely fastened the hatch. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Naval Service.
