The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant, Junior Grade [then Chief Boatswain’s Mate] James M. Boone, United States Navy, for gallantry in action. When fires were raging on his warship during a battle with Japanese forces off Savo Island, 14 – 15 November 1942, Lieutenant, Junior Grade, Boone led the way in extinguishing nearly every fire on the weather decks. He put out several fires unaided, and rapidly controlled all threatening topside fires. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Naval Service.
