The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private First Class George Delos Faas (ASN: 37542775), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving as a Medical Aidman with the Medical Detachment, 129th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces at Bougainville, Solomon Islands, from 15 to 17 March 1944. Private First Class Faas, unarmed and with heroic disregard for his own safety, repeatedly crawled to and from pillboxes under exposure to heavy enemy fire to administer treatment and safely evacuate numerous wounded comrades. In doing so, he himself suffered wounds, but refused to withdraw. During the height of a counterattack with crossfire at its greatest, he spotted four wounded men helplessly exposed. He ran into the open to their assistance, rendered aid, and remained with them until they were removed. When his own wounds had been dressed, Private First Class Fassi insisted upon returning to the front where he continued his work, courageously going from one pillbox to another; aiding wounded in the open at night, when he was a target for both friendly and enemy fire. His exemplary bravery and devotion to duty contributed immeasurably to the physical comfort and morale of his comrades and exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States, reflecting great credit upon himself, the 37th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
