The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy and Marine Corps Medal to Chief Torpedoman’s Mate William H. Beck, United States Navy, for heroic conduct while serving aboard a United States Submarine during World War II. In charge of one torpedo room during four war patrols in Japanese-controlled waters, Chief Beck, by his thorough knowledge of his duties, contributed in large measure to the success of his submarine in sinking one enemy cruiser and one destroyer, and seriously damaging another cruiser with two torpedo hits.
