The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy and Marine Corps Medal to Lieutenant, Junior Grade Arthur T. Guja, United States Navy, for heroic conduct during World War II. While on a convoy assignment in command of a small, newly commissioned vessel, Lieutenant, Junior Grade, Guja effected the rescue of 113 survivors of a torpedoed ship despite poor visibility and heavy seas. He provided for them aboard his crowded vessel for five days, caring for their needs as adequately as his limited provisions would permit.
