The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Lieutenant, Junior Grade Daniel W. Byerley, United States Navy, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight in 1942. While attached to Scouting Squadron THREE (VS-3), Lieutenant, Junior Grade Byerley participated in seven dive-bombing attacks on a large number of Japanese warships, in addition to many aerial searches and destructive assaults on land bases.
