The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Lieutenant Martin P. MacNair, United States Navy, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight during World War II. As a pilot of Scouting Squadron THREE (VS-3) in the Solomon Islands, Lieutenant MacNair participated in four attacks on Japanese warships through heavy curtains of anti-aircraft fire. During a night attack on four destroyers operating off northern Guadalcanal, he assisted by his aggressive tactics in forcing the vessels to withdraw.
