The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Captain (Infantry), [then First Lieutenant] George William Everett, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company B, 1st Battalion, 399th Infantry Regiment, 100th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces near Flein, Germany, on 13 April 1945. While approaching the town of Flein, hostile troops were observed and Captain Everett, calling to his platoon to provide covering fire, charged forward alone, firing his weapon and shouting. His action so disconcerted the enemy that they fled from prepared positions to take cover in a ditch and a nearby building from which they returned fire. Captain Everett killed one of the opposing troops and wounded two more. He then entered a house and taking a firing position at a window, called upon the enemy to surrender. Several of the hostile infantry capitulated, soon followed by 15 riflemen from the ditch. His courageous and aggressive action resulted in the capture of 32 Germans and the seizure of the town without a single casualty. Captain Everett’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 100th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
