The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Torpedoman’s Mate Second Class Clyde W. Evans, United States Navy, for gallantry in action off Savo Island on 12 – 13 November 1942. When his ship, the U.S.S. CUSHING (DD-376), was under intense bombardment, Torpedoman’s Mate Second Class Evans, after firing the torpedoes from his own tube, proceeded to man another tube mount after its crew had been wounded and fired the tubes there. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Naval Service.
