Bureau of Naval Personnel Information Bulletin No. 318 (September 1943)

The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Musician First Class Alva J. Zattiero, United States Navy, for gallantry in action off Savo Island, 30 November 1942. After his ship had been badly damaged by a torpedo hit, Musician First Class Zattiero, although isolated from the rest of the ship, gave his life jacket to an injured man unable to swim. Later, during abandonment of the vessel, he assisted wounded personnel over the side and aided those without life jackets to reach a place of safety. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Naval Service.
