The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Chief Engineman Jim William, United States Navy, for gallantry in action in the Solomon Islands area on 30 November 1942. After a terrific explosion had damaged his ship, Chief Engineman Williams, despite injuries, continued to perform the duties of his station and assisted in the evacuation of patients trapped in a gas-filled and flooding sick bay. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Naval Service.
