The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Ensign Robert Edward O’Neil (NSN: 0-114969), United States Navy, for gallantry in action during the occupation of French Morocco, 8 to 11 November 1942. Diving through a hail of anti-aircraft fire from hostile ships and shore batteries, Ensign O’Neil delivered a successful glide-bombing attack against coastal defense gun installations near Casablanca. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Naval Service.
