The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Legion of Merit to Watertender First Class Leo M. Savage, United States Navy, for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services to the Government of the United States on 25 May 1942. Although the fireroom was deluged with oil and water following a torpedo attack on his ship, the U.S.S. BLAKELEY (DD-150), Watertender First Class Savage courageously remained at his station, securing boiler fires and personally examining the forward bulkhead and bilges for damage.
