(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Corporal Robert Leslie Ethridge (ASN: 34572054), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company C, 375th Field Artillery Battalion, 100th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces in the vicinity of Raon L’Etape, France, on 8 November 1944. En route to a new gun position, the truck carrying Corporal Ethridge’s crew was met by automatic fire which cut off escape to the rear. Despite savage enemy fire, Corporal Ethridge manned the machinegun on the ring-mount of a truck and knocked out the crew of an automatic weapon positions, thus saving the life of seven comrades who had been pinned down by enemy fire. Corporal Ethridge’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty at the cost of his life, exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 100th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
