Bureau of Naval Personnel Information Bulletin No. 317 (August 1943)

The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Electrician’s Mate First Class Ernest William Johnson, United States Navy, for gallantry in action while serving aboard the U.S.S. CUSHING (DD-376), off Savo Island, 12 to 13 November 1942. When his ship was badly damaged by enemy bombardment, Electrician’s Mate First Class Johnson, after abandoning ship, returned to the vessel aboard a life raft and assisted in evacuating other personnel. He boarded the burning vessel and rendered further aid to his shipmates until compelled to again abandon ship to save his own life. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Naval Service.
