The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Private Bernadino Yanez Estrada (ASN: 38070627), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company E, 2d Battalion, 128th Infantry Regiment, 32d Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces near Buna, New Guinea, on 16 December 1942. During the attack of an infantry company against prepared enemy positions, Private Estrada advanced alone over open ground to a position within twenty yards of an enemy pill box, which he attacked with grenades and rifle fire. When his unit advanced to the position, Private Estrada again took the lead in clearing out enemy dugouts. He was killed wile voluntarily engaged in clearing the last enemy position. Private Estrada’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty at the cost of his life, exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 32d Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
